At its plenary session at the end of March the EP adopted a system of transport limited to a maximum of 9 hours in total for animals intended for slaughter on journeys of over 100km. Animals with serious illnesses or those that are too young should not be allowed to travel. To reduce animal suffering, Parliament also voted for minimum standards for vehicles and for a ban on the use of electric prods. All drivers should also receive training leading towards a special animal welfare certificate. Where standards are infringed, drivers could have their authorisation withdrawn for up to one year. Penalties would include imprisonment. Labour MEPs supported tightening up inspections and backed the call for spot checks to be carried out by national authorities on the road. |
